Hair Myths We Hear at the Salon All the Time

There is a lot of hair advice passed around online, from family, friends, and social media, but not all of it is true. At Hunters Hair, we hear plenty of common hair myths in the salon, so here are some of the biggest ones, debunked.

Myth 1: Cutting your hair makes it grow faster

This is one of the most common hair myths we hear. Trimming your hair does not make it grow faster from the roots, but it does help remove split ends and keep the hair looking healthier as it grows.

If you leave damaged ends for too long, breakage can make it seem like your hair is not growing. Regular trims help keep the length you are working so hard to grow.

Myth 2: Brushing your hair 100 times a day makes it healthier

Over-brushing can actually do more harm than good. While gentle brushing helps distribute natural oils, too much brushing can cause friction, breakage, and frizz.

The key is to brush your hair only as much as it needs, using the right brush for your hair type.

Myth 3: Oily hair does not need conditioner

Many people with oily hair avoid conditioner altogether, but that can leave the ends dry and unbalanced. Conditioner should be applied mainly through the mid-lengths and ends, not the scalp, if your hair gets greasy easily.

Skipping conditioner can actually make the hair feel worse over time, especially if the ends become dry and prone to breakage.

Myth 4: Hair products stop working if you use them too long

Your hair does not become “immune” to shampoo or conditioner. What often happens is that your hair changes because of weather, colouring, heat styling, or general condition, so it may need something different.

If your routine is no longer giving the same result, it may be time to reassess your products rather than assume they have stopped working.

Myth 5: You should not wash your hair often

There is no one-size-fits-all rule for how often you should wash your hair. Some people need to wash more frequently because of oiliness, exercise, or product build-up, while others can go longer between washes.

The right washing schedule depends on your hair type, scalp, and lifestyle.

Myth 6: Plucking one grey hair will make more grow back

This is completely false. Plucking one grey hair will not cause multiple grey hairs to appear.

That said, repeated plucking can damage the follicle, so it is better to leave greys alone or discuss colour options with your stylist if they bother you.

Myth 7: Heat protectant is optional

Heat protectant is not just an extra step — it plays an important role in helping to reduce damage from blow-dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. Without it, hair is more likely to become dry, weak, and frizzy.

If you use heat tools regularly, heat protection should always be part of your routine.

Myth 8: Blonde hair always has to be high maintenance

Blonde hair does need care, but that does not mean it has to be difficult to manage. With the right home routine, regular toning, and proper salon aftercare, blonde hair can stay soft, shiny, and beautiful without being a nightmare to maintain.

The same goes for all colour services — the right products and advice make a huge difference.

Hair myths can make things confusing, especially when they sound convincing. The best advice is always to trust what works for your hair type, scalp condition, and lifestyle rather than following one-size-fits-all rules.
